A major new public campaign to massively improve the UK's shabby existing housing stock, including through the use of renewables was launched at EcoBuild recently.
The Grand Designs Great British Refurb campaign is an exciting new campaign launched by Grand Designs TV presenter Kevin McCloud, calling for the government to stimulate a UK-wide retrofit programme and make it easier and more affordable for people to make their homes more energy efficient.
REA is assured by core member WWF that the campaign will include measures for renewable energy and we hope to work more closely with them in future (including to secure the successful delivery of domestic Tariffs).
The energy we use in our homes accounts for a massive 27% of the UK’s carbon emissions, making a huge contribution to climate change. We all want to reduce our energy use, and we can all take important steps. Our vision is a world where UK homes have lower energy bills, are more comfortable and have less impact on the environment. with the introduction of domestic tariffs people will even be able to earn money from the energy their homes produce.
This important campaign will target the long-neglected area of existing buildings and promises to make energy makeovers exciting!Go to www.greatbritishrefurb.co.uk to add your name to a petition that will be personally delivered to Gordon Brown by Kevin McCloud at the end of June - please do also forward the link to your contacts.
The Grand Designs Great British Refurb campaign is a partnership between WWF, the Energy Saving Trust, Grand Designs Magazine and the UK Green Building Council.
